Las Terrenas as a destination

August 10, 2026

Las Terrenas is a town located in the northeastern part of the Samaná Peninsula, in the province of the same name. It is approximately 225 kilometers from Santo Domingo. Along with Sánchez and Santa Bárbara de Samaná, it is one of the three municipalities in the province.

Founded in 1946 as a fishing village, Las Terrenas is today one of the most beautiful destinations in the Dominican Republic.
The area combines a tourism offering based on some of the best beaches in the country. It maintains a very intimate scale of development in the form of elegant accommodations and small, locally operated hotels; large all-inclusive resorts are not to be found.

The area always presents a welcoming atmosphere and a harmonious ambiance, inviting rest and tranquility. It also boasts a mild climate year-round.
The region’s natural wealth is one of its main attractions and gives it a distinctive and unique character. The area boasts stunning natural attractions nearby, such as:

Los Haitises National Park: This beautiful national park has a rich diversity of vegetation and wildlife, including important endangered species. Within its boundaries are numerous caves displaying petroglyphs created by the Taíno people, the island’s original inhabitants before the arrival of Europeans.
Excursions to this fascinating place are organized from Las Terrenas.

El Limón Waterfall: This is a beautiful 45-meter-high waterfall located in the heart of the tropical forest. Its cascades into a natural pool, perfect for a relaxing swim. The waterfall can be reached on horseback via the “Coffee Trail,” where visitors can purchase and sample typical Nicaraguan food and drinks. To reach the waterfall, it is necessary to contact tour operators who organize guided excursions.

Humpback Whale Watching: From January to March, humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrate to the waters of Samaná to mate and give birth. This makes the area world-renowned as a prime location for whale watching tourism. The experience of observing these magnificent animals is further enhanced by the presence in Samaná of the Whale Museum, an institution dedicated to the scientific research of humpback whales and other cetaceans, as well as to teaching and disseminating knowledge about these marine mammals.

Las Terrenas boasts a rich and varied culinary scene. Visitors can find European, international, and Creole cuisine in the numerous restaurants and bars located in the town. Many of the restaurants and bars in Las Terrenas are situated in

The fishing village, a former settlement of locals that has become the gastronomic and nightlife center of the region. Those who wish will find restaurants, pizzerias, and bars there, all within the setting of evocative Caribbean architecture and with a spectacular ocean view.
Playa Grande Golf Course: Golf in the province of Samaná remains somewhat of a challenge. However, an hour and a half from Las Terrenas lies the beautiful Playa Grande Golf Course, designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr. With ten holes bordering the stunning Atlantic Ocean coastline, it offers an alternative for golf enthusiasts. Those who have visited it assure that its scenery rivals that of the famous Pebble Beach course in California, USA. The fairways hug cliffs from which you can see different shades of blue of an ocean that seems to be part of the game. On some holes, you’ll have to hit a good shot to navigate chasms with waves crashing against the rocks below. On others, the challenge will be judging the distance against a strong, cool breeze blowing off the sea. Everyone who has played this course agrees that the scorecard is insignificant compared to the overall experience of playing here. For many Dominicans, Playa Grande is by far the best course in the country, even though its international promotion and recognition are significantly lower than those of other renowned courses in the Dominican Republic.
